Just make a report filtered to meet your rrquirements. Then edit the Form Properties to use that report. The Report Link setting will ensure you only have children of the parent and the report filters will further limit the children.
Where is the option to add a look-up text field that references a report rather than a field?

When you edit the Form properties for that drop-down field element on the New Style form, the slide out panel will give you the option to specify which report to use.
